In late 1945, a German doctor (Hoffmann) and his two teenaged daughters (Kristen and Eva) arrive by freighter into the sweltering, squalid port of Cayenne in French Guyana. They enter the South American country with forged passports and under assumed names.
But the doctor is recognized by two people who were once in a Nazi labor camp, and now are in the employ of a group which is on the lookout for Fascist fugitives wanted by the Allied War Crimes Tribunal.
The two men, a middle-aged mute (Torsvan), and a young man of nineteen (Karl) are obsessed with bringing to justice the criminals who once ran the type of camp in which they were imprisoned for two years. But at what point can righteous retribution curdle into poisonous revenge?
Into this maelstrom of hidden motives and impenetrable enigmas enter other mysterious characters a prominent Nazi in Brazil (Kepple) who now assists others of his kind to slip into South America; his treacherous minor functionary (Einmann), whom he sends to masquerade at helping the doctor; the local guide (Belamonte) who recognizes a blackmail opportunity when he sees one; and the corrupt French official (Gratienne) who ruthlessly controls the entire port of Cayenne.
All are in pursuit of the German doctor and only too late discover the truth about him and his family. But by then, the two former camp prisoners have become everything they once detested. The karmic wheel has turned. The hunters have become the hunted.

Alejandro Grattan-Dominguez is a former screenwriter/film director who over a 25-year career in Hollywood wrote 23 scripts of which he either sold or optioned nine of them. He also directed and/or produced five feature films, one of which, Only Once in a Lifetime, premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and later was selected as an Official U.S. Entry at the prestigious Deauville Film Festival in France. The movie was the first major film about the Mexican-American experience and was selected the Hispanic Film of the Year by two national magazines in the United States.
In 1987, Grattan semi-retired to Mexico, his mother’s native country, where he began to write novels, as well as more screenplays.
Today, he has published several critically-acclaimed novels and two of his more recent screenplays have won awards at major film festivals in Mexico. Two of his novels, "The Dark Side of the Dream" and "Breaking Even," are in over 1,000 libraries in the US and Canada. Since 1995, he has been the Editor-in-Chief of El Ojo del Lago (www.chapala.com), now the most widely-read monthly English-language magazine in Mexico. Since 2009, he has also served as the editor of a sister-publication, El Ojo del Mar (www.elojodelmar.com) which was designed for the west coast of Mexico.

Whereabouts Unknown, by Alejandro Grattan Dominguez, is a smooth read that keeps you turning pages because the story moves along from Germany during WWII to post war South America, chasing Nazis and sometimes shadows. The characters are made real. For example, I saw Claude Rains playing the role of the corrupt yet decent Guiana customs man. Although it would be hard to identify with the circumstances that brought the protagonist to Guiana or his mute companion, their human side is fleshed out so that you can not leave them until you can see them through the situation they are in. The daughters of the Nazi being pursued are three-dimensional women who capture the heroic side of the protagonist and of the reader. Jim Tipton was right. This should be a movie. Alex Grattan writes a story that makes his reader think as well as turn pages.Product details

Whereabouts Unknown edition by Alejandro Grattan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I found the book to be a page turner. French Guiana seems to be a fascinating country and that period after WW II when ex-nazis were fleeing into S. America is filled with captivating stories. The ending, while not being of the "happily ever after'' variety was apropos and contrapuntal.
I really enjoyed this book. Truly couldn't put it down. The settings were so well described that I could feel and even smell the places. The characters were so believable that I never on e paused to think "this is only a novel. Don't worry about them". I highly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of adventure.
"Whereabouts Unknown" is an exciting, suspenseful, and interesting story of a German Doctor and HIs two daughters who fled Germany after WWll to avoid possible War Crimes. Mr Grattan is an incredible writer. I literally could not put the book down. Whereabouts Unknown is a "must read" for those who love suspense and good writing!
You hear and see so many stories about that tragic time in our history, but I never really wanted to study what really went on because I really didn't want to know. Through his real life characters and great story telling abilities, Grattan has brought that time into better understanding and focus for me. I think I'll have to delve further into a subject that scares me, but also fascinated me.
Whereabouts Unknown, written by Alejandro Dominquez Grattan, lures the reader on with a mysterious cast of international characters, the intrigue of exotic French Guyana, the timing of post WWII chaos and the suspenseful intersection of several plots. For me, it all seemed like a movie. With every turned page, I could actually see the sets; the vine tangled chateau, the Buick convertible, the wretched room under the church. It felt strangely like Casablanca, with unique characters coming in and out of the scenes affecting the lives of Von Haber and his family. Even the deaf mute's inability to speak never diminished his strength as a character; a tribute to the author's ability to paint pictures without words.
I loved the way I could see it all happening. I didn't want it to end. Cleverly, the author tied up many strands, but left others dangling for the reader's imagination, again like in a movie. This book showed the author's mastery as a screenwriter.
A dab hand has written Whereabouts Unknown, a suspenseful political Thriller ("It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark") by the same hand that brought us The Dark Side of the Dream, Breaking Even, and The Stuff of Dreams--my friend (full disclosure here), Alejandro (Alex) Grattan. Yes, he has done it again by uniting his power of imagination, his technical skill, and his gift of metaphor. ("Corruption and inefficiency were of endemic proportions, rampant as the bubonic plague had been in Europe in the fifteenth century.") Nor should I forget his raw powers of observation and soul-searching reflection on the human condition that gives his novels their psychological depth. Add to that his mastery of dialogue, and we wish that his next endeavor be that of a playwright!
The theme here is old by now Nazi concentration camp personnel escaping to South America after 1944 and whose whereabouts are eventually discovered by relentless Jewish "Nazi hunters." But don't yawn yet. Alex tells a good story and creates characters that ring true. He has an infinite capacity for taking pains to "get it right" in terms of appropriate speech and emotions. His coolly objective prose brings to life an entire world--French Guyana where "there was a level of senseless violence that he had seen only when the Nazis came to power in Germany."

Grattan's richly textured writing flawlessly pulls the reader in an intriguing story of deception. The characters are fully formed and become both friends and enemies as the complex story unfolds. The villain is believable, even human, yet has power over life and death. When I finished the book I searched in vain for a sequel, but alas, the author has not yet reentered this very special world he has created for all who delight in a great story. This novel is a must read. Rob Mohr
